Writing and Depression

October 12, 2008

CNN had an interesting article that links writing and depression, basically saying that the more creative you are the higher chance you might be clinically depressed or bi-polar. This of course doesn’t mean if you’re depressed or bi-polar that you will be an amazing artist, but it does help to explain the suicides and disease ridden artists throughout time. Of course I point to examples like Hemingway or Hunter S. Thompson. It is a terrible thing for these people to go through and for those that have it, I think that art is a form of release from it, a way to put your emotions into words to express them through a vehicle that doesn’t point directly to you. I don’t think I have these diseases so I am happy for that, but I do appreciate the works and expressions of those that did. I am sorry for your suffering all of you out there.

Awesome Alphabets

October 10, 2008

Words are fun! I know it, the readers of the world know it and everyone else should know it if they don’t. This article which has a play on how to write the letters of the alphabet is just another example of how fun words can be. Check out the full article here, or see some of my favorites below. What is your favorite way to write the alphabet, with spaghetti?

It’s the Beardabet!

A Blessing Poem Card

October 8, 2008

I know I talk about note cards and greeting cards a lot, but I think it is important that we write and send little notes to our loved ones because people need to see that you think there relationship is worth the effort that it costs to write a letter. Also all of our electronic communications will be lost when we are all dust, but our writing on cards will survive us for the historians of the future to understand how we lived. With that said, I love the blessing that this card has and I recommend that you read it, it’s old, but that just means it was good enough to stand the wear of time.

Killing the Mockingbird…

October 6, 2008

As you, scout and I know. You don’t kill the Mockingbird because there song is just too beautiful. I would imagine the person that doesn’t like this sound probably also doesn’t like the sound of a cool breeze through the trees or the sound of sprinklers raining down water droplets on a lawn…these sounds are as American and are our homes when we are far from them. We should cherish them, not try to destroy them…

Top 10 Banned Books

October 1, 2008

Banning books seems to be about as American as apple pie these days. The practice of censorship seems to be OK because we allow the ignorant and unintelligent run our schools and media infecting mainstream society with their narrow ideals and philosophies. It annoys me that there is even ONE book on the banned book list and I wish that things like this never existed. It is our responsibility as enlightened citizens to read these books to expand our awareness and understanding of the word no matter how divergent these views are from our own. Ban books? We should ban the book banners.

Whoa…Deep

September 24, 2008

Be the wolf.

Check out this image below, not only is it hilarious, but it also is sad at the same time. It points out the truth about formula writing, that the names and places are interchangeable so much so that you can create completely different stories that also happen to gross tons of money. It is sad that people choose not to be challenged with new styles of art and instead full into dull drums of routine and simplicity. Come on people, wake up!

This is a poem that was introduced to me in High School and has to be one of my favorite poems. It is simple, practical, and deep all at once. Read it with a glass of wine.

Advice to My Son by J. Peter Meinke
(b.1932)

The trick is, to live your days
as if each one may be your last
(for they go fast, and young men lose their lives
in strange and unimaginable ways)
but at the same time, plan long range
(for they go slow; if you survive
the shattered windshield and the bursting shell
you will arrive
at our approximation here below
of heaven or hell).

To be specific, between the peony and the rose
plant squash and spinach, turnips and tomatoes;
beauty is nectar
and nectar, in a desert, saves–
but the stomach craves stronger sustaenance
than the honied vine.
Therefore, marry a pretty girl
after seeing her mother;
Show your soul to one man,
work with another;
and always serve bread with your wine.
But son, always serve wine.

Business Card Bookmarks

September 15, 2008

Since the business card is really becoming a dying, trend what are we going to do with all those dye cut little pieces of paper? Well I like what this guy is thinking, turn them into bookmarks! I really like this idea because you can have a bookmark with little qoutes on it and it smaller than a normal bookmark. Check it out:

Racism in the Schools

September 9, 2008

The US isn’t the only country that is suffering from institutional racism in schools, apparently the Caribbean is not free of it either according to the Guardian. To me this is just sickening because education is where the higher learners are, where the people with the most though and understanding in the world go. I mean what the heck people? Education is the backbone of understanding, without a solid education that teaches tolerance this world will fall into disrepair and intolerance that will destroy us all.
