Martin Luther Quote

June 1, 2008

Martin Luther, the great German church reformer, had a very interesting quote that talks about social decent seen below. What interests me about this quote is the understanding of danger and unpopularity you will receive for doing what is right. When the masses become complacent, you as a person that recognizes the need for change, must risk personal safety and defy the norm. This of course is dangerous, and when taking on an organization like the Catholic Church (which Luther did), could even mean a life of excommunication, or even death. But the higher social calling is what Luther speaks to. Even though you risk much for yourself, you do great things for the rest of the world. And that is for more important that any one person.

There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right….
